Touring Presentation Goodness
Just a quick reminder that our presentation is tomorrow at The Good Bike Cafe in the parking lot of Freewheeling Bicycles. We’ll be talking about our trip, the basics of what you’ll need for touring (especially S24Os) and we’ll also be showing some great touring videos from the internet – a mini bike touring film festival! It will be a fun and social bikey evening. Laura and I will be there around 6pm to meet and greet so if you want to come out early and hang out, please do!
In addition to the presentation, we’ve got prizes to give away and some specials from local businesses!
The Good Bike Cafe is a purveyor of tasty wraps and some killer coffee. I’ve recently become addicted to their macchiato which they make the traditional way with some strong espresso shots and just a dusting of milk foam. Laura digs their sweet Cuban coffee. If you arrive by bicycle, you’ll get a 25% discount off of food and drinks! Come early because it’ll be a busy night!
Angie from Freewheeling Bicycles is super excited about bicycle touring and is offering a limited time special at the shop. You’ll get 5% off of any touring bicycle and trailer and 15% off gear until 9/10! That means 5% off a Trek 520, Surly LHT or the Redline Metro 9 (a great commuter and over night bike camping bike). If you’ve been wanting to get a rack and pannier set (Ortliebs, Arkels, Jannd, etc.,) you can get them for 15% off. Angie will have some touring bikes and gear outside on demo and will keep the shop open until sunset.
We’ll also be giving away some Klean Kanteen gear (water bottles and their new insulated bottles).
And of course, there will be plenty of Adventure Cycling magazines to look at as well as the chance to win some yearlong memberships!
See you there!

I hope the event went well tonight for you guys. I just came across your website tonight and have to say that I am majorly impressed. I am so impressed by all the amazing cyclists and cycling advocates out there. Thanks for being leaders and encouraging others to be a part of this magnificent sport and lifestyle that we love.
Are you guys actually trying to make a living doing this or do you just enjoy shilling for all these companies and organizations?
Yes we are making a go at making a living at this. These companies and organizations are ones that we believe in very deeply. Adventure Cycling is a great organization that promotes bike travel and is working on national bicycle highway system and creates what are now the de facto maps for crossing the country. Klean Kantean has a great record of philanthropy for bicycle and environmental causes. Freewheeling bicycles is one of the oldest bicycle shops in Austin that is being very supportive of bike touring. The Good Bike Cafe is a new business, operated by two brothers who are using their families old recipes and offers 25% off to people that arrive by bike.
The more we travel, the more we’ve consciously made the decision to engage and immerse ourselves in local bicycle cultures and businesses. When we lived in Long Beach, we were very active in bicycle advocacy. For me (Russ), it’s very interesting to see how other cities are coping with bicycling as a legitimate form of transportation. Part of our emerging goal is to encourage others to hop on their bikes and travel and that is why we hold these gatherings and work with local businesses.
