Val’s Memorial Ride
This video is a little out of sequence from the rest of the series, but I wanted to post it before it lost too much timeliness. We recently went up to the San Juans to stay with friends and passed through Seattle in the process. We happened to be there for a memorial ride for Val Kleitz, a legendary figure in Seattle’s bike scene. Known for wearing fedoras and cowboy hats, as well as blow past roadies THEN smoking a cigarette, he was a larger than life figure. He was also known for his Xtracycle cargo bike known as the Dreadnought. Here’s a video of the memorial ride in his honor.

Beautiful story, thanks.
Reminds me of Sheldon Brown in the since a person so beautiful and giving passes too soon. I regret not having the opportunity to meet someone like this. It was cool to her Kent Peterson’s comments. He too is a Legend in my opinion. Kent’s writings are really insightful and inspiring. Russ and Laura I really believe the this site will be recognized as an important piece of the cycle touring genre too. The alchemy of personalties, images and stories is inspiring. Thanks for sharing your experinces.
