Review: Rivendell Sam Hillborne
In this video I review the Rivendell Sam Hillborne, a bike that in some ways was a precursor to the modern gravel bike. How does a bike with quill stems and rim brakes hold up to modern bikes?

Good for you! If you like it, it’s a good bike. I have owned several and still own 3 customs, one of which is 20 years old. To your comments I’d add:
Rides like a Cadillac, weighs as much too.
Unless everyone on a group ride is on a Riv, and the pace picks up, get ready to suffer. They will go along all day, at around 15-6mph, but that;s it. Acceleration is not it’s strong suit. Once up to speed, ok. Solo rides, a la, Frank Patterson, are it’s strong suit.
I hope you enjoy it.
Follow up to my comment earlier. After viewing this, I had a 64cm Hunqa built up exactly like this. Same colors and all,

So great to see this review. I love the Rivendell way. I get it. And I’m getting my first Riv very soon. Just waiting to see the new silver/green in the Joe Appaloosa. May go orange though. Your bike is beautiful! Did you consider the Albatross bar when you got the Bosco? Just curious.
Wishing you many happy miles on your Riv. I’m on my 3rd Rivendell. My first was a Toyo built Atlantis which I loved. The only reason I don’t have it any more is because I was hit by a motor vehicle while riding it and the frame was totaled. I replaced that with a Rivendell Glorius for city riding which I sold earlier this year after buying a Taiwanese built Atlantis frame. I’ve loved them all. I own other bikes But I love the simplicity and the ride quality of the Rivendells.
Took me buying a lot of bikes to finally realize that a bike like this is all you really need. Great ride feel, quality finish and parts you can fix yourself…perfect. Actually very smart to buy this in 2021 instead of a carbesium fashion bike with squeaky disc brakes that falls apart in year two of ownership.
