Why I’m Ditching 1x Drivetrains
I’ve given 1x drivetrains an honest try for the last few years. To get the range I want in a mechanical system without switching to a new freehub and proprietary system is impossible. So, I’m going back to 2x.

I am torn between the Tumbleweed Stargazer and the Kona Sutra LTD.
I just watched your videos about the Stargazer.
Do you have any thoughts on comparing these two bikes?
Thanks
Keith
I have 1x, 2x, and 3x in my stable.
For dedicated mtb trail riding, I find my 12s 1x 10-52 with a 28t up front is perfect. I find the low sufficent and the high is good enough for riding a little bit of road back to the trail head or completing a loop.
For my road and roadish bikes, having a 2x makes more sense, gears for the climb and gears for descents/fast long flats. I believe one of my bikes has a 53/39 w 9s 11-27 cassette – that is the light racey bike. The wide tired light touring/drop bar off roadish bike has a compact crank with an 11-34 which I find ample.
My touring bike and steep cascade forest road bike is a bit of an odd duck.. 10.5 speed 3x… I found the 11 and 10 speed shimano XT components work very well together so I have a 10s XT triple crank 42-32-24 matched with an 11-40 cassette using the m8000 long cage derailleur. The gear range technically exceeds the capacity of the derailleur but surprisingly shifts very well. I love having that stupid low gear for punishing sections of climbs, and for carrying camping gear up steep roads!
