I just saw this on Facebook, but one of our attendees at the Beer and Books party took a little video. Thanks Greggory!

Tammy and I also plan to take Amtrak to Portland here in a couple weeks. Off the top of your head do you know what Amtrak’s policy is for transporting bikes on a long trip?
Do you have to box it up in special package or can you just hang it where there is room. I know the latter is the case for short trips but for this trip I suspect we would have to box up the bikes for the journey from Sacramento to Portland. I’ve been trying to find it on their web site and haven’t found it yet.
Cheers,
Logan.
Logan,
You’ll have to put your bike in a box. I believe it is only on the Pacific Surfliner can you travel with an unboxed bike.
The drill is that you have to buy a bike box at the station (call ahead to make sure they have them!). To box the bike you 1) take off the pedals 2) loosen the stem so the handlebars are turned to the side while the wheel stays pointed forward.
Step 2 can be complicated if you’re bike is big, your handlebars are a strange shape or if you have a front rack. So be prepared to bring some tools and get there early if you can!
I found this http://twurl.nl/zhncgf but it doesn’t look like the coast starlight is listed as a “bike service” train. Looks like its probably checked baggage only. I’m still going to call the number listed to find out but it doesn’t look promising.
