A Life in My Shoes
In this video, I sort through my shoes, narrowing it all down to 2 pairs. My Keens for cycling and hiking and some Merrel sneakers for everything else. What I realize in the process is that my shoes have formed a sort of accidental history of my life. I can trace the ebb and flow of my personality and desires through my shoes! Strange and humorous.
In this episode, Russ attacks his shoes. In the name of simplification, he gets rid of 12 pairs of shoes. In so doing, he realizes that his shoes have formed a sort of accidental history of his life.

Pedal History rather than Oral? 🙂
Interesting juxtaposition between your shoes and Laura’s cards and letters.
I have never been able to articulate why I yearned to keep items from the past that were no longer of use. I always referred to it vaguely as an “emotional bond”. Your statement about “hand-holds to the past” was very intriguing and described this feeling precisely. Thank you. It also occurred to me that this episode will fill that void the shoes leave behind and you will be able to remember where you’ve been just by watching it again in the future.
One of my favorite quotes of insight from the film Forrest Gump was:
“Momma always said there’s an awful lot you could tell about a person by their shoes. Where they’re going. Where they’ve been. I’ve worn lots of shoes.”
Cheers, 🙂
Logan.
This made me smile. Things seem okay. Thanks.
I love your blog and especially the slideshows!
On a practical note – do you know that Nike stores will take your worn out sneakers and grind them up to make sports courts? They needn’t end up in the landfill.
Ah to walk in one’s shoes… Bein’ a travel writer I’ve walked in a lot pairs of my own. Interesting that lately it’s come down to Keen Newport H2’s for me too. Laid back enough, serious if needs to be, capable for varied terrain, and leaves a crazy tiger stripe tan. They’ve served me well so far.
I’ve been following your blogs for a while and am inspired by your work.
This is so true.
Shoes are important to us.
They show we have been places and done things.
They show our personality, taste and lifestyle.
They show that we have walked the earth.
But, do we need to keep them to tell us these things? I don’ think so either.
Great post!
