A few screamers…
Orcas has the reputation of being the hilliest of the San Juan islands. For every uphill, however, there are some screaming downhills. Here’s a vid with some great ones. In the video, we’re following our host Carl from East Sound to the ferry landing. I was definitely going over 30 and with about 85lbs of gear on the bike it makes for an interesting ride.
All of this shot with a GoPro Hero Wide.

You sounded like a truck coming up behind me sometimes! 😉
I can relate. I had about the same weight on my LHT and did just over 40mph on a downhill. And isn’t it great how true the LHT tracks at that speed?
Oh, and thanks for the camera tip. I’d like to get a Hero Wide at some point.
Mrs Dibbly & I once had our tandem over 45mph on a long, straight descent. Not many chances to do that around here. It was a blast-and-a-half! 🙂 I like that your vid includes the brake lever, btw.
Be safe!
Russ: Once the tour is done, I wouldn’t mind seeing your comments on the new Canon G11. Looks like they’ve addressed the low-light issues.
That is great video. I especially loved the fact there was no shaking. Russ, where did you have it mounted?
Peace 🙂
Nice video. I’ve got to get one of those cameras. It’s amazing how steady it is. Handlebar mounted?
Any chance of a bit more detail on how the bikes handled at those speeds with all the gear?
